About Gear Up Cycles – Cycling with Purpose

Gear Up Cycles is a Social Enterprise established in 2012, born from a passion to empower young people through cycling and mechanical training. Originally created in partnership with Worth Unlimited, a Youth and Community charity, our aim was to harness the skills and talents of a small group of young people, giving them the opportunity to learn, grow, and make a difference.

As we’ve grown, we’ve seen the powerful potential for cycling and bike mechanics to transform lives, particularly for young people facing barriers such as unemployment, inactive lifestyles, and living in deprived neighbourhoods. Our mission is simple: to use the power of cycling to inspire positive change, create opportunities, and build brighter futures.

Our 'Cycle, Fix, and Teach' Strategy

Through our 'Cycle, Fix, and Teach' strategy, we engage young people in practical, hands-on training that helps them develop valuable skills, build confidence, and explore career opportunities. We offer apprenticeships, training, and mentoring that guide young people towards employment, helping them discover their own potential and find meaningful work.

Our Social Impact Goals

At Gear Up, we are committed to maximising our social impact in the following ways:

  1. Engaging Young People:
Using cycling as a tool to engage marginalised young people in positive activities, life skills education, and vocational training. We help them develop the skills needed to secure employment and take on new opportunities.

  2. Affordable Cycling for Local Communities:
Through our Recycled Bike Scheme, we make cycling more affordable and accessible for disadvantaged communities. By refurbishing and selling second-hand bikes, we provide affordable transport options to those who need it most.

  3. Promoting Health and Wellbeing:
We encourage greater participation in cycling by offering led rides and cycle training, promoting physical activity, and helping people improve their health and wellbeing.

  4. Supporting Sustainable Travel:
We help local businesses become more sustainable by offering Cycle to Work schemes and providing support for organisations looking to increase cycling participation among their workforce. Our aim is to reduce carbon footprints and promote greener, healthier commuting options.

Your Ride, Their Future

When you choose Gear Up Cycles, you’re not just supporting a local business – you’re helping us create opportunities for young people and make a positive impact on our community. Every purchase, service, and donation helps fund our training programs and apprenticeships, building a brighter future for those who need it most.
